What is FATAL SONG
SYNOPSIS:
Traditionally, popular operas like Carmen, La Boheme, or La Traviatta, are marketed by selling the thrill of “love and death.”
The heroine dies.
But what happens if Carmen, Mimi and Violetta don’t want to die?
FATAL SONG brings together heroines from eleven famous operas, backstage at the opera house. And they start to count the bodies: why are they all dying? It must be the music. Singing is dangerous. Violetta wants them to unite against their oppression.
But a mysterious Master of Ceremonies keeps intervening, turning their desire to escape into a desire to become immortal.
If they live, their lives become banal. If they don’t die a dramatic and beautiful death, what do they have to look forward to? Mimi, for example, sees herself as a crone with a tan selling handicrafts in the south of France.
In the end the characters decide that they are powerless against the transcendent beauty of the music. Even if they have to die a thousand deaths. As Violetta says “All I want to do is sing and I don’t care who knows it.”
